گواتر به بزرگ تر شدن غده تیروئید بیشتر از حد طبیعی آن اطلاق می شود؛ غده تیروئید از دو لب -بخش- تشكیل شده كه هر لب تیروئید در حالت طبیعی به اندازه بند انتهایی انگشت شصت هر فرد است؛ لب های تیروئید در دو طرف نای قرار دارد و معمولا قابل مشاهده و لمس نیستند.

اگر تولید هورمون از غده تیرووئید بزرگ شده به اندازه طبیعی باشد، به بیماری ایجاد شده 'گواتر ساده' گفته می شود.

در 'گواترهای سمی' میزان تولید هورمون توسط غده تیروئید یا به عبارت دیگر عملكرد غده تیروئید بیش از حد طبیعی است.

اگر غده تیروئید بزرگ شده برای تولید هورمون كافی، توانایی لازم را نداشته باشد، 'گواتر كم كار' حاصل می شود.

**علل ایجاد گواتر

وقتی غده تیروئید نتواند به اندازه كافی هورمون تولید كند با بزرگ شدن خود سعی در جبران تولید كم می كند و به دنبال آن گواتر ایجاد می شود.

شایع ترین علت این فرایند كمبود ید است بنابراین اگر بدن شما به اندازه كافی ید نداشته باشد، نمی توانید به اندازه كافی هورمون تیروئید تولید كنید.

در چنین حالتی غده تیروئید با بزرگ شدن خود سعی در برداشت بیشتر ید از جریان خون می كند و تولید هورمون خود را به اندازه طبیعی می رساند.

در این بیماری سیستم ایمنی فرد، غده تیروئید را بیگانه تصور كرده علیه آن واكنش نشان می دهد و موجب بروز التهاب در غده و در نتیجه بزرگی آن (یعنی گواتر) می شود. این بیماری كه ممكن است به صورت گواتر ساده یا با كم كاری تیروئید همراه باشد در زنان شایع تر است.

علت دیگر بزرگی غده تیروئید یا گواتر، تومورهای تیروئید است كه خوشبختانه اغلب آنها خوش خیم هستند اما در صد كمی از آنها نیز ممكن است بدخیم باشند.

به گفته وی، میزان شیوع گواتر هنگام آغاز برنامه غنی سازی نمك ها با ید در سال 68، حدود 68 درصد بوده است اما هم اكنون پس از 22 سال به كمتر از 7/4 درصد رسیده است.

رییس اداره بهبود تغذیه جامعه وزارت بهداشت، تاكید می كند بیماری گواتر به دلیل اجرای برنامه های غنی سازی نمك با ید، كنترل شده است.
